Hidden Narratives

by Beth Thomas

Myths, legends, narratives and fairy-tales can all sometimes be too chilling for us to delve into. Some of them we have heard through word of mouth, leaving us too uncertain to trust them. Some have elements too mystical for us to wrap our heads around, and some are just too frightening to carry on reading, leaving us reluctant to ask the question: are they real?

My project brings the dark stories and folklore centred around Wales and Aberystwyth to life, through the medium of two short, symbolic films. The audience will be free to lose themselves in the sinister sounds, imagery, and tales explored in each of them. My work has been deeply inspired by Lindsay Macintyre's filmography, William Jenkyn Thomas' Anthology, The Welsh Fairy book, and Aberystwyth Art Centres' 2018 exhibition, Hanes: Tales, Stories, Legends & Myths.
