Live Art

by Magdalena Rosa

Bodypainting is considered by some people to be the oldest form of art, practiced for tens of thousands of years. Traditional tribes used bodypainting to show the relation between history, spirituality, and the body. Modern bodypainting has its origins in the 1960s, when artists experimented with transforming bodies into living canvases. This art form is a symbol of impermanence and changeability. Each time a painting ritual appears, the physical aspect and the psyche are confronted. In this way, the interdependence between human and nature, and the inevitability of transience, is revealed. And, perhaps from this variability of artistic expression, they receive an extraordinary reception of live images.
